'American Vertigo: Traveling America in the Footsteps of Tocqueville,' by Bernard-Henri Lévy - The New York Times Book Review - New York Times
So I'm not a huge fan of Bernard-Henri Lévy either, but Garrison Keillor is nothing if not harsh on the fellow. I was a fleeting fan of the series originally published in the Atlantic. While I agree with Keiller's laments, I did not take as much offense to the writer's shortcomings. I did find him hard to read and fascinated by subjects unbecoming a foreighn writer - like American Kitch, for example. Having lived abroad, that was the least flattering quality in all of my wonderful European (Asian, South American, or African, for that matter) friends. They have a morbid affinity with obsequious Americana. Which is another way of saying, leave the
Americana to the
Americans.
