R.I.P. WYSIWYG - Results-Oriented UI Coming (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)
Goddamn. Why does this make me feel like an old fart? I have no idea what he's going on about. Is that why?

Getting away from the "user" in "user-centered design" is a recent focus of Jakob and his business partner Don Norman - see the Donster's recent article that started a flamefest across all of the IA and web design mailing lists: User-Centered Design Considered Harmful
They're basically saying to move away from doing marketing-style segmentation of people into demographics based on superficial (and mostly irrelevant) characteristics and instead, to isolate and group what tasks they're trying to accomplish. Sometimes a married 40 year old father of two just wants to empty his brain with a few hours of Playstation just like a college student, sometimes girls like to shop for grilling equipment and gadgets, etc.
