I think Synapsis is very well done. I wonder how much work went into the 'natural' jumping of the different circles. I wonder how they analyzed information to make it more interesting. For example, when a specific dot/IP kept getting more pings or packets, it would make the dot grow larger.
Normally, the dot would stay there and grow in it's own place- but they make the dot jump back and forth to keep it interesting. (Also, I wonder how they created reletionship between the dots- perhaps by Traceroutes [finding how close each machine is to others?])
This would be interested to do with referring links- but I doubt incoming links would be interesting as packets bouncing from machine to machine.
I think there is a google-based link map. I'm racking my brain to find it for you though. It's a flash app that shows your site and all of the referrers to your site and their current make-up of your overall linking popularity.
